FAA Air Traffic Control Schools

Air traffic controllers have job opportunities around the globe.

The Federal Aviation Administration is the primary employer of air traffic controllers in the United States. Individuals who wish to go to school to obtain employment as an air traffic controller with the FAA should attend a school that features FAA-approved air traffic controller curriculum and courses.

  1. FAA-Approved Schools

    • The FAA has certified and approved specific schools and courses (see

Resources) as a part of the official Air Traffic-College Training Initiative program, otherwise referred to as the AT-CTI program. The FAA encourages all prospective employees to receive either a two-year or four-year non-engineering based aviation degree from an approved program prior to applying for air traffic controller position openings.

    AT-CTI Curriculum

    • The FAA's AT-CTI program introduces students to a wide range of information about the aviation industry. Students learn the basics of the aviation industry, including all of the aspects of air traffic control and how to understand radar reports and chart flight paths.

    Program Completion and Testing

    • Upon the completion of the AT-CTI program, students are expected to be able to successfully pass various certification tests with appropriate scores. Students who do not pass the certification tests with the prerequisite scores still graduate from the program, however they are not eligible for employment with the FAA until they successfully pass the test and receive their certificates.

    Obtaining FAA Employment

    • Once students have received their degree and passed the required tests, they may apply for job openings with the FAA. Completion of the AT-CTI program does not guarantee employment, however.
