Colleges for sound engineering prepare students for various tasks performed by sound and audio engineers. A degree in sound engineering may be used to obtain positions as an audio engineer, video equipment technician, broadcast technician, sound technician, radio operator, software sound engineer and a variety of other career options.

  1. Recording Connection Audio Institute

    • The audio engineering program at the Recording Connection Audio Institute focuses on hands-on training. This program is based in Los Angeles, California, and teaches students in an actual recording studio instead of a classroom setting. Each student will be assigned a mentor for individual instruction during the program. The Recording Connection Audio Institute's program covers various areas of sound recording, including microphone placement, Pro Tools and running the audio board. The program also teaches students how to interact with talent and creating the final mix. In 2011 tuition varied from $7,750 to $9,520 depending upon the payment option chosen.

    Musicians Institute

    • The Musicians Institute, located in Los Angeles, also offers an audio engineering program. The program focuses on classroom as well as hands-on training in the studio using professional quality equipment including, Neve, SSL, DigiDesign and Neumann. There are day and night schedules available. The Musician's Institute also offers a recording studio lab that is accessible 24 hours per day. Students of the audio engineering program at Musicians Institute will also have the opportunity to intern at professional recording studios. The program can be either two or three quarters. Tuition in 2011 was $8,400 per quarter.

    • The SAE Institute, based in the United Kingdom, offers several degree types in audio engineering. The institute is recognized worldwide and has over 50 locations around the world. The school can tailor its audio engineering program studies to fit individual needs. The institute offers an audio engineering diploma, bachelor's degree and a master's degree. The program uses a combination of formal lectures, practical workshops, guest lectures and creative audio projects. Tuition in 2011 was $20,000 for the nine-month program.

    Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences

    • The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences teaches students the basics of recording arts. This includes work in the studio, concerts, movies, and video games. Located in Arizona, the program also focuses on working with musicians, engineers and producers. The program will cover basic topics such as principles of sound, microphones, recording techniques, digital recording and automated consoles. Students will also learn the basics of music business. In 2011, tuition was $18,608 for the seven-month program.
