International Study Scholarships for U.S. Citizens
Spending a semester studying in a foreign country can be an enriching experience for students since they can immerse themselves in a different culture. However, studying abroad can also be expensive, and many students simply can't afford the tuition, room and board and travel costs that come with international studies. Fortunately, a number of scholarships exist that help students fund their international studies.

American Institute for Foreign Study
-
The American Institute for Foreign Study offers 40 scholarships annually to students who plan to study internationally. The scholarships, which are a one-time award of $1,000, require students to write an essay detailing how study abroad will impact their academic and personal growth. In addition, applicants need to have a minimum 3.0 college GPA, be able to demonstrate leadership potential and have participated in multicultural extracurricular activities.
CIEE Scholarships
-
CIEE Study Abroad offers a number of scholarship opportunities for students. Some scholarships, like the Peter Wollitzer Scholarships, specify that students study in Asian countries such as China, Cambodia, Taiwan or Vietnam. Other scholarships are open to students studying anywhere across the globe. To apply, students must submit an essay that details their study-abroad program, their objectives during their international studies and their financial need. Scholarship recipients submit a one-page essay to CIEE detailing their study abroad experience when their semester ends.
