Engineering Colleges for Structural Steel

Structural steel is a form of steel that can be manipulated into shapes for use in construction projects. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects construction and building jobs, including those involving structural steel, to increase by 17 percent by the year 2018.

  1. Ohio State University

    • Ohio State University offers a civil engineering undergraduate program. Upon completion of the program, the student will receive a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. This program includes courses in mathematics and science, as well as core civil engineering courses. The student may choose to specialize through his choice of electives. The range of choices includes transportation highways, structures and structural analysis, hydraulic engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction equipment methods and scheduling and remote sensing. The degree requires a minimum of 45 credit hours, with at least 25 hours in civil engineering courses. In order to graduate, the student must maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or better.

    Imperial College of London

    • The Imperial College of London offers a degree in structural steel design as part of its civil engineering discipline. This program is offered in 12 modules, with six modules being taught per semester. These modules are comprised of core and elective courses to help the student complete a full course of study. This program also provides several guest speakers who are currently successful in the industry.

    University of Illinois

    • The University of Illinois offers three degrees in structural engineering: a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, Master of Science in structural engineering and a PhD in structural engineering and mechanics. The basic structural engineering course builds the base for the rest of the program by teaching the basic design of trusses and framed structures. It also covers the effect of shears and loads on the structure.

    Finding the Right School

    • Finding the best engineering school to attend can be daunting, even overwhelming. There are several criteria you can use to make this decision. Evaluate the facilities on the campus. Make sure that computer laboratories and other hands-on learning equipment are well maintained and plentiful. Research the reputation of the school. You can do this online or by speaking with people you know in the engineering field. The final criteria should include cost. Find out how much the school will cost for the duration and compare that with similar schools in which you are interested.
