Systems Engineering Colleges

Systems engineering is a subfield of engineering that involves specialized engineering methods that focus on developing different components of a system. A college degree in systems engineering enables students to develop skills to create a variety of functional systems. Numerous colleges around the United States offer various programs in systems engineering.

  1. Northeast

    • Situated in West Haven, Connecticut, the University of New Haven's Tagliatela College of Engineering offers a bachelor's degree in system engineering. The Bachelor of Science program strives to provide students with quality education to give them the competitive edge in the field. It provides strong theoretical instruction in principles of engineering, mathematics and science. It requires 128 credit hours to complete and includes an internship and a final team-based design project that is sponsored by the industry. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Boston University College of Engineering Division of Systems Engineering offers two master's degree programs and a doctorate degree program in systems engineering. The division is committed to research on computational and analytical techniques. Both the Master of Science degree in systems engineering and Master of Engineering degree in systems engineering require completion of 32 credits that include high-level courses and structured courses. The Ph.D program requires extensive research in a variety of areas such as automation, information sciences and service systems.

    Midwest

    • Oakland University is situated in Rochester, Michigan. The institution's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering grants a bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree in systems engineering. The Bachelor of Science program requires 128 total credits and includes general education courses, core courses and a team-based senior design project in collaboration with a local company. The Master of Science program involves a 32-credit flexible curriculum that enables students to choose from various courses based on their interest and career goals. The Ph.D program is intended for students who plan to pursue careers in industrial and governmental research fields. It requires in-depth research tasks and a residency requirement. Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa offers an online master's degree in systems engineering. It is designed to help engineers develop and hone analytical skills needed to create, assess and build complex engineering systems. Students are able to complete either a coursework-only option or a creative component option. The coursework-only option requires 30 credits in systems engineering, elective engineering, elective non-engineering courses and an additional elective course. The creative component option involves a creative program and passing an oral examination.

    South

    • Florida Institute of Technology is located in Melbourne, Florida. Its College of Engineering Department of Engineering Systems offers a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in systems engineering. The programs enable engineers and professionals to obtain the required education and skills to incorporate engineering and management aspects into their careers. The M.S. program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours and students can select a thesis or non-thesis option. The Ph.D program requires at least 49 credit hours beyond a master's degree include 24 credit hours of doctorate-level coursework and 24 credit hours of dissertation research. Located in Dallas, Texas, the Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University offers an M.S., Ph.D and executive M.S. program in systems engineering. The M.S. program requires 30 credit hours that include core courses and selection of a specific systems engineering track: systems engineering technology, system engineering and design, systems engineering application or logistics and supply-chain-management. The Ph.D program requires 30 credit hours in core systems engineering, 15 credit hours in a specific systems engineering concentration area, nine credit hours in a minor supporting selected research area and 24 credit hours of dissertation. The executive program is designed for professionals and involves a fast-pace curriculum to facilitate expertise in development and management of systems.

    West

    • The University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, offers systems engineering programs at the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science levels. The 128-credit B.S. program provides instruction on design methodologies and points of view that focus on system integration. The M.S. program requires at least 30 graduate credits and prepares students for higher-level careers in the field. Students can choose a thesis, report, coursework and examination option for the master's degree.
