Children can construct a Santa hat as a fun Christmas craft.

Make Christmas party hats with nothing more than heavy paper and a few basic craft supplies. Keep the designs simple so the children can do most of the construction on their own. If you make the hats with a group of children, prepare the pieces ahead of time to help the hat-making process go smoothly.

  1. Santa Hat

    • Cut a triangle from heavy red paper. Make the width of the bottom of the triangle as wide as the front of the child's head. Glue cotton balls to the bottom of the triangle so it resembles the white fur that is the trim on Santa's hat. Glue a single cotton ball to the top point of the triangle. Create a head band from a strip of red paper twisted into a loop with the ends stapled together. Make the band wide enough to fit around the child's head so it rests just above the ears. Attach the Santa hat to the front of the headband with glue or staples.

    Christmas Crown

    • Turn a paper plate into a simple crown. Cut a slit across the center of the paper plate leaving 1-inch of the plate rim uncut. Cut three additional slits, dividing the plate into quarters. Fold up the triangles formed by the slits to make the points of the crown. Use a large enough plate so the rim fits around the child's head like a headband. Give the child craft supplies like paint, glitter and stickers to decorate the crown with a Christmas theme. Glue a jingle bell to the tip of each triangle on the crown once the decorations are complete.

    Reindeer Headband

    • Trace the child's hands on heavy brown paper. Cut out each handprint and staple it to the sides of a brown paper headband to form the antlers. Make larger antlers by attaching two handprints together for each antler. Glue a pipe cleaner up the length of each antler if the paper isn't heavy enough to stand up on its own. Tie red and green ribbon around the base of each antler to add more color, if desired.

    Santa Visor

    • Cut a crescent moon shape from red or green poster board; use red for Santa and green for an elf. Poke a hole in either point of the crescent and tie a string through it. Tie the string in the back of the child's head to hold the visor on. Glue cotton balls to the brim of the visor. Make Christmas-themed designs on the rest of the visor with glitter paint.
