What Is a Good Research Paper Topic?
When selecting a research paper topic, keep in mind certain criteria. Simply picking out a subject that interests you may not necessarily answer to the requirements of the instructor and the specifics that she has laid out. In a sense, a good topic is just as important as the content itself. You may have a well-written paper, but if the topic falls short, then your grade could suffer.

Controversy
-
A key element of a viable research topic is whether or not it inspires debate. Writing about an issue that has only one side will not only produce a flat paper, but you may also find that your research will be more challenging, as there will presumably be less information on the topic. Find a polarizing subject that has two distinct points of view that can be dissected and researched in depth.
Feasibility
-
When attempting to select a rich, thought-provoking topic, be mindful not to overdo it and bite off more than you can chew. In your preliminary research, check to see the available information and just how hard it will be to develop your topic. Even if you feel that you can pull off a difficult project, keep in mind that time will also an issue (see Reference 1).

Interest
-
Obviously, research will be required no matter the topic, but it is important that you write about what you know. Select something that you have at least a burgeoning interest in and basic knowledge of. It will show in your writing, as your work won't be as dry and your own voice will be evident in your paper. Also relating to interest is the issue of topic relevance. Is it a widely known and discussed subject that people would want to read about? (See Reference 1.)
Originality
-
While you don't want to get too tangential, you will stand to get a better grade if you stay away from a topic that everyone else in the class is writing about. No matter how hard the teacher tries to stay impartial, in the end he can't help but compare your work to the other similar work; it's human nature. The more unique your topic, the more your paper will stand on its own.
