Elementary school teachers of pre-K to 5th grade are a major influence on a child's life. Becoming an educator for young children requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in either early childhood education or elementary education, state licensure and completion of a state teacher certification program. When in college, it is important to take the appropriate classes to prepare for a career as a teacher of young children.

  1. Introduction to Early Childhood Education

    • Introduction to Early Childhood Education classes are designed to give future teachers an overview of what they need to know to prepare them for their careers. Students in these courses are taught child psychology, theories of child development from infancy to the fourth grade, and issues pertaining to diversity in the classroom.

    Educational Psychology

    • Teachers must handle a wide variety of potential problems in the classroom. Educational psychology is a class designed to teach them how to do so. Educational psychology teaches you about mental health or neurological issues that might affect your future students, such as attention deficit disorder. The course also teaches you classroom management skills and ways to handle special situations or mental health problems that might arise.

    Health for Early Childhood

    • Health for Early Childhood gives future teachers experience working with children and learning about children's need for a caring educational environment suited to a variety of learning styles. This course requires you to work directly with children.

    Classes for Teaching

    • Elementary and early childhood education programs also require future teachers to learn elementary mathematics, reading and language skills, science, social studies and history. Pre-K through fifth grade teachers will need a working knowledge of all of these subjects to be successful in an elementary school classroom.
