How Do I Handle Bullies in School?
Bullying is a problem in many schools. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, approximately 50 percent of children have been bullied during their school years. Bullying can cause a child to do poorly in school and even think about suicide. There are ways, however, to handle bullies in school.
-
Ignore the Bully
-
Bullies like to pick on kids to get a reaction out of them. They want them to cry or to get angry. Act as if he isn't even there. Just turn around and walk away from the bully. If the bully thinks that his behavior isn't affecting you, he may get bored and stop bothering you.
Walk with a Friend
-
A good friend will likely help you in a time of need. Ask a friend to walk with you to lunch or somewhere you think you may see your bully. A bully may think twice about bothering you if he sees you walking with a friend.
-
Stand Up to the Bully
-
Be brave and tell the bully to stop picking on you in a loud, firm voice. Then, simply walk away. Once he sees that you will not put up with his bulling, he may leave you alone.
Tell a Trusted Adult
-
Some bullies will not leave you alone, even if you ignore them and tell them to stop bothering you. If this is the case, it is time to tell a parent. Tell your parent all the things the bully has been doing to bother you and how it has been affecting you. Also, explain that you have tried to handle the situation on your own and the bullying has still not stopped.
