Texas Defensive Driving Courses

Many of today's defensive driving courses are taught online.

There is no worse feeling than looking in the rear-view mirror and seeing the flashing lights of a police car. Speeding tickets can increase insurance rates and restrict driving privileges. Most states offer defensive courses that, when completed, will remove tickets from driving records. Drivers can even take them to obtain insurance discounts or just to improve their driving skills. Texas drivers have a number of course options, including many they can take online.

  1. I Drive Safely

    • I Drive Safety is an online driver's safety course that began in 1998 in California. As of 2011, it is approved in over 25 states, including Texas. It has been selected as the AAA preferred supplier for online driver programs. It offers two defensive driving courses -- one for ticket dismissal and one for insurance discounts -- as well as a Texas law seat-belt course. All of I Drive Safely's courses are approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Courses cost $25 and the certificate of completion is mailed free of charge.

    Comedy Defensive Driving School

    • Comedy Defensive Driving School was founded in 1989 and is taught by professional comedians. It makes otherwise dreary material fun to learn and provides Texas driver's courses for education, auto insurance reduction and traffic ticket dismissal. The class is approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and accepted by all courts in the state for ticket dismissal. The school offers both online and in-person classes with more than 30 locations throughout the state. Fees vary from $25 to $50, depending on the location. You will need to bring a pen, drivers license, traffic citation (if applicable), any paperwork from the court and cash or money order for the fee (unless you paid online). You should arrive 15 minutes early as state law prohibits latecomers from being admitted.

    Ticket Erasers

    • Ticket Erasers' Texas Defensive Drivers course is TEA-approved for ticket dismissal. It is a six-hour online course that can be completed once every 12 months to have a ticket removed from your driving record. It offers a money-back guarantee if the course does not meet expectations and has online representatives available 24 hours a day to answer questions. The course employs 3D graphics and videos as part of its teaching techniques. It has been approved in all Texas courts to satisfy the requirements needed to dismiss a traffic ticket. The cost of the class alone is $25. The cost for both the class and your Texas driving record -- needed for ticket dismissal -- is $50.

    Ticket Stop

    • TicketStop offers a Texas Education Agency (TEA)-approved defensive driving online course that fulfills the state's requirements for ticket dismissal and insurance reduction. The course takes about six hours to complete (five hours of instruction and one hour of break time). The class features videos, audio and graphics. You can stop the course and resume it when convenient. Online customer service is available 24/7. The fee is $30.
