Watermelon Games for Children thumbnail
Watermelons provide children with nutrients and fun on a hot summer afternoon.

Not only is watermelon a healthy snack choice for children, it can also provide an afternoon of fun. Take advantage of the seeds inside the watermelon or the buoyancy of a ripe watermelon in water to set up fun games for your children to enjoy on a hot summer afternoon.

Lay a stick in the grass for contestants to stand behind. Invite children to eat watermelon and save their seeds. Instruct children to stand behind the stick in the grass and spit a seed as far as they can. Award the child whose seed flies the farthest beyond the stick.

Ask a child to decorate the outside of two paper plates with markers, crayons, paint or glitter. Fill one plate with dried seeds. Staple the plates together leaving no room for seeds to slip out of the edges. Shake the maracas while playing some festive music.

Cover a watermelon entirely with Crisco, Vaseline or butter. Toss the watermelon into a pool. Tell all swimmers the object of the game is to be the first swimmer to get the greased watermelon out of the pool. Alternatively, if there are many players, divide the group into teams. Try to be the first team to get the watermelon to the other side of the pool.

Divide the group of players into two teams. Each team must stand in line on one side of the pool. Toss two watermelons in the pool so each team has its own. The object of the game is to be the first team to push the watermelon to the other side of the pool and back without touching their feet to the bottom of the pool. Each team member must take a turn and return first to win the game.
