Engage children in what their lives would have been like thousands of years ago.

When homeschooling children, engage their imaginations and their cognitive focus through creative lessons on ancient history. Ancient history allows us to look at the past and to consider how much and also how little things have changed. Give your home-schooled students a strong interest in ancient history with hands-on activities. Relate their lessons on ancient history to their lives and how their lives would have been different if they were born thousands of years ago.

  1. Athens and Sparta Comparison

    • Before Greece was a unified country, it was a series of city-states, which operated independently of each other, with their own laws and customs. Athens and Sparta were two famous city-states, and they were very well known for different things. While Athens was known for its famous artists and thinkers, Sparta was famous for its military prowess. Ask your students to research both Athens and Sparta and to write a paper about what their life would be like if they lived in one or the other.

    Sugar Cube Pyramid

    • The pyramids are one the iconic images representing Egypt, but they were found all over the world, including in the Middle East and South America. Do a unit on who built pyramids and what they were used for. As a supplementary art project for your pyramids unit, have your students build a pyramid out of sugar cubes, using glue as a mortar. Build a square layer on the bottom and add increasingly smaller layers all the way to the top.

    The Great Wall of China

    • The building of the Great Wall of China was a process that took many years, and it was intended to protect China from invaders. According to Travel China Guide.com, the building of the Great Wall extended throughout the Zhou, Ming, Han and Qin dynasties. Ask your students to pick a dynasty and to research what was being done to the Great Wall during that time. Discovery Education states that little work was done on the Great Wall during the Tang Dynasty; ask your students to guess why that might have been.

    North American History

    • Before Europeans came to North America, many civilizations and cities were already thriving on the continent. Native Americans originally came to North America during the Ice Age, when it was possible to walk across the Bering Strait. Many different tribes and nations populated North America, ranging from nomadic people who traveled across to the land to people who created permanent settlements and cities. Ask your students to choose one Native American group and to do a report on how they lived and what their lives were like.
