Fun activities in elementary school learning

Children entering first grade are preparing to face new challenges including longer school days, increased autonomy within the school and more homework. First grade education primarily focuses on strengthening and building skills in reading and math. While not all first graders are tested, it is a period when formal assessments, like quizzes and tests, become more common. There are a variety of strategies and activities to help first graders prepare for tests.

  1. Online Interactives

    • Online test prep activities are colorful, interactive and engaging while helping students prepare for success on tests. In addition, online test prep tools are self-paced so students can learn at their own speed anywhere there is an Internet-connected computer. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a large education publisher maintains, Eduplace.com, a series of standards-based online activities for all grade levels. To find additional resources, consult your school's instructional technology coach.

    Word Search

    • Word search puzzles help first graders identify familiar words among other letters, strengthening language arts skills. Basic word searches are arranged in box-like patterns while others are constructed around themes and shapes such as animals and cars. Educators can purchase word search books for the classroom through your school's purchasing department and provide copies for students to use for homework and practice with parents.

    Vocabulary Game

    • The Vocabulary Game is a simple activity that helps first graders connect simple words such as big, with other words that mean the same thing (huge). Start the activity by identifying an item your first grader can describe. Any object can be used as long as it is clearly visible and has easily recognizable traits. For instance, the object may be a pencil described as "skinny." Students may choose several words to describe the object. Pick one and offer synonyms for the word. Skinny might also be described as thin, slender, fine and so on. Ensure students understand that each also means skinny. Gives students some time to think of other words that might also mean skinny before moving on to other objects. Use visual representations of the words (write them on the board or paper) so your first grader gets used to identifying the words.

    Dot to Dot

    • Dot to Dot is a visual number sequencing/counting activity that helps first graders improve their counting skills. The activity emphasizes individual work. Students connect a series of numbered dots that form various pictures such as trees, cars or trains. Allow students to complete the image by connecting the dots in order. After completion, students can shade and color the final picture.
