Furniture Ideas with Futons

Modern futons are couches that lay down flat and are converted into a bed. Futons originated in Japan and were used both for sitting and sleeping. They are convenient furniture choices if you have limited space and need to add an extra bed to your home, or if you are on a budget and want to get the most from your money. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bunk Bed

    • The bunk bed futon gives you a regular bunk bed, but the bottom bed also doubles as a couch. It is a bi-fold, meaning there is a fold in the middle, and so it becomes a couch by day. This is useful if you have two kids in one room, or if your child has sleepovers often. With a futon that folds out into a bed, both children can sleep in beds instead of in sleeping bags on the floor.

    Leg Rest

    • Some futons are tri-fold, meaning they fold down at the back and lift up below the seat, making a leg rest section. You can raise just the bottom portion to create a leg rest while you are still supported by the back cushion. When you are ready to go to sleep, simply lower the back rest to finish the bed conversion. Since this it furniture that people are going to sleep on, make sure there are only clean feet or shoes on the leg rest.

    Arm Rests

    • Some futons have outer edges that can be raised to create arm rests. Beneath your cushion or mattress, this type of futon has a wire frame that bends to create the arm rest angle you desire.

    Sliding and Folding

    • When futons become beds, there are two motions that allow them to do this. They can slide to become a bed, or the back can fold down. For the type that slides, when the futon is turned into a bed, instead of folding down, it slides out. This works like a reclining chair where the potion you sit on slides further into the room and the back lays down. Remember you will need room in front of the couch for the futon to slide. If you have a folding futon, the back of the couch is opened flat to turn it into a bed. With a fold-out bed, you may need to move the futon away from a wall before being able to use it because if the back is against the wall, it won't be able to fold down.
