Test Taking Tips for High School
Taking tests is an important part of high school. Tests can, however, be difficult for a lot of students. There is only a certain amount of time allowed to take a test and many students feel a lot of pressure. Since high school tests make up a large portion of overall grades, it is important to learn ways to do well on them.
-
Be Prepared
-
Begin studying for the test at least a week in advance, so you are not forced to fit in so much information the night before the test. Ask your teacher what kind of material will be on the test. If there is a study guide, look it over carefully. Instead of spending an hour watching television at night, study for your test.
Be on Time
-
It is important to have as much time as possible to take a test. Tests that require you to write essays will take up a lot of time. If you are late, you may not have enough time to finish the test and you will most likely feel rushed. Arrive to class at least 10 minutes early to refresh your mind on the material (see Reference 1).
-
Ask Questions
-
There are some questions on a test that you may not understand. The teacher could have made a mistake or the question could be written in a confusing way. Ask your teacher to explain a question that you don't understand. Don't feel embarrassed if you need clarification on a certain question. It is better to ask for help than to get a question wrong.
Answer the Questions You Know First
-
There are likely going to be at least a couple of questions on a test to which you do not know the answers. Instead of focusing on a question you do not know, answer the questions you do know first. There is no point spending a lot of time on a hard question because you may run out of time. After you are done answering the questions you know, try and answer the hard questions again (see Reference 1).
