How do I Teach Children Go Green Activities?
Going green and helping the environment is an important task for people of all ages. Teaching children at a young age to go green is especially significant because they will grow up to be environmentally-conscious adults. Recycling and reusing materials, saving energy and lessening our carbon footprint are all lessons that can be taught to kids through fun activities. Protect the environment by teaching kids to go green.

Trash Bags

To help children learn about waste production and recycling, ask each child to bring a brown paper bag to class. Instruct the kids to carry it around throughout the day and to place every piece of trash they produce into the bag. For homework that night, ask the children to divide and categorize their trash (categories can include paper, plastic and organic trash). Instruct the kids to make a graph of their findings and bring it to class the next day. As an entire class, go through the data collected to show the amount of trash produced in a single day by the students. Follow by giving a lesson on landfills and recycling programs.

Get kids thinking about innovative ways to reduce trash production in the classroom and in their homes with brainstorming. To start the activity, ask every child to bring in a washcloth or hand towel from home. For an entire week, ask the kids to use their towel instead of paper towels for drying their hands or cleaning up. Discuss how using the towels reduced the amount of paper towels used in the classroom. Follow by asking kids to think of new ways to reduce waste in their homes such as reusing plastic water bottles and glass jars, recycling paper and buying in bulk.

Eco-Friendly Instruments

Teach kids about reusable materials by helping them make musical instruments. Ask kids to bring in empty plastic bottles, yogurt containers, cereal boxes, rice and pasta from home. Explain how to identify reusable and recyclable materials like the ones they brought to class. Using foil and rubber bands, secure the pasta and rice inside the containers to make reusable musical instruments. Allow the kids time to play their instruments and put on their own concert.

With this fun activity, you can teach kids about keeping the earth clean and about proper waste disposal. Ask kids to bring a brown paper grocery bag to class and allow them to decorate the bag with markers or crayons. Keep the bags lined up against a wall in the classroom. During recess or other outdoor activities, instruct the kids to go around and pick up pieces of trash they see on the ground. Every couple of days, award the student with the most litter collected with a certificate or other prize.
