Superior photos come from preparation as well as from a creative eye.

Wedding photography can be daunting to a new photographer. Most of the work of wedding photography is actually accomplished before the wedding. By setting yourself up for success, your chances of capturing striking photos is greatly increased. When shooting, the goal is to create an exceptional album--not just an exceptional photo.

  1. Plan the 'Good' Photos

    • Most of a wedding's key moments are actually scheduled. Everything from the "I do's" to the cake-cutting has a specific time it will occur. Set yourself up early at good spots to capture these moments, and half of the work will be done. You can probably obtain a timetable from the wedding planner or bride and groom. Remember to wear a watch so you don't lose track of time.

    Bring Lots of Backup

    • You'll have little to no time during the event to correct any equipment that malfunctions or fills up. Bring several memory cards and camera batteries to be able to shoot at all times. Even if you have a way to unload cards or recharge batteries, you could miss precious moments while you're waiting. You'll achieve more success by capturing as many images as you can, and editing it down later.

    Shoot Different Types of Images

    • Filling an album with shots of people, details, and wedding scenes creates a more delightful album than an album that consists only of people. A close-up of wedding rings, hands held, or the entire ceremony adds a layer of depth to the collection and captures the scale of the event. When producing the actual album, consider two albums: the "official" one, plus a casual one that includes more redundant shots and photos from the guests.

    Specialty Images

    • If you have the budget and technical knowledge, consider bringing a special lens, such as a fisheye. The added variety will bring a professional feel to your album. Additionally, you could set a camera to take a photo every minute of the entire location and produce a stop-motion video of the occasion. Such distinct renderings of the normal wedding photo experience would be remembered by the viewers for a long time.
