Activities for Kindergarten & First Grade on Rhyming Sentences
Learning about rhyming words take place in kindergarten and first grade. Rhyming helps teach reading skills as children are able to connect pictures and words together. It also helps build connections between words, including the spelling of the words. Kindergarten and first grade activities need to include many pictures and hands-on scenarios for best results.

Stories or Poems
-
Select a story or poem that focuses on rhyming words. Choose books such as "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" by Bill Martin Jr., which have rhyming sentences. Instruct the children to touch their nose when they hear rhyming words. When the children touch their noses, ask them to tell what rhyming words were heard. Have pictures of the words and write the word under the picture. Keep all the pictures until the story is over. Put the pictures in centers and have the children find rhyming words in small groups to build upon.
Worksheets
-
Provide worksheets with pictures of cats or mice. Below the main picture have three options for the students to select. Have the students circle the word that rhymes with the picture above it. For example, if the word is "mice," the students should circle a picture of ice or rice. First-grade students then should be able to write the word below the picture.

In-Class Games
-
Create fun games that utilize rhyming words. Games are good end-of-day activities when the children are ready to go home. A fun game to play with rhyming words is bingo. Make bingo cards with a number of words that rhyme. Create different arrangements of cards. You can even use the same words under different letters if you run out of rhyming ideas. This game reinforces rhyming words, letter recognition and pattern recognition.
Online Resources
-
Your classroom may be equipped with classroom computers. If your students have free time, find websites that offer rhyming word games the children can play. For example, Scholastic's website offers the game "Reggie Loves to Rhyme." The game has students select a place such as a library or store and are provided items that are commonly found in these places. The students then must select the correct rhyming word to the word displayed.
