Teachers in Florida can enjoy the surf and sun but can expect wages slightly lower than the national norm.

Florida may feature sunshine and beaches, but teachers looking for work in the Sunshine State will also find employment opportunities, especially in some of the state's large metropolitan areas. However, average salaries through the 2009-2010 school year in the state were lower than the national average, a trade-off for the warm weather and beaches.

  1. Average Salary

    • According to TeachinFlorida.com, the average salary for teachers working in the Florida public school systems in the 2009-2010 school year was about $46,000. This wage was slightly lower, just over -0.5 percent, than teachers earned in the 2008-2009 school year, and below the national average.

    Salary by City

    • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as of May 2009, teachers in the largest Florida public school systems earned between $47,000 and $54,000. The highest paying districts included schools in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area as well as Tallahassee, with an average of around $54,000. Orlando-area teachers earned just over $53,000 while teachers in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area made around $52,000. The lowest reported earnings were in Jacksonville, at about $47,000.

    • The state of Florida, according to Teachersalaryinfo.com, in 2009 spent more than $9 billion on education. Expenditures for teacher benefits topped more than $2.7 billion. On a per student average, the state of Florida spent more than $5,700 per student on teacher salary and supplies.

    Comparable Teacher Salaries

    • If you are looking for jobs in neighboring states in the southeastern region, Georgia may be a good option. In 2009, according to Teachersalaryinfo.com, teachers in Georgia enjoyed a more than 5 percent increase in wages over 2008, earning an average of about $51,000. That salary is higher slightly than the national norm and several thousand dollars higher than the average teacher working in Florida. In neighboring Alabama, however, in 2009, the average salary for teachers was slightly lower at about $46,000, though teachers in that state also enjoyed a 5 percent increase.
