Ideas for Art Projects for the 6th Grade
Most 6th grade art students are just beginning their first year of middle school and many are about to enter their teenage years. Ideas for 6th grade art projects could include projects dealing with adolescent issues that 6th graders face such as self-image, peer cooperation and family life.

Hand Expressions
-
Just as people like to talk about themselves, students enjoy drawing themselves. Have your students draw pictures of their hands, and then have them draw symbols or phrases that describe who they are or who they want to be inside of the hands.
Self-Portraits
-
Although 6th grade students may not be able to draw facial details to perfection yet, self-portraits can still be an enjoyable project for art class. Have your students bring in pictures of themselves, and then blow up the pictures on a copy machine. Even if the pictures are blown up in black and white they will give the students something to copy from. This is a good project to do at the beginning of the year, and then again at the end of the year to see their growth.

Sculpture
-
For this art project, each student writes a short essay about a personal experience that has affected him in some way. If he does not have one, he can make it up. When the essay is complete, he constructs a clay sculpture that depicts the main idea of the essay. The students can use a variety of paint colors to help with their descriptions.
Peace Quilts
-
Each students makes a quilt block signifying what she views as peace. You may wish to use copies of each student's hands for the blocks. However, any symbol of peace can be used. Peace signs, hearts, pictures of the world or other symbols of cooperation and friendship can be used. Have each student decorate one block of the quilt, and then hang the finished quilt on the wall as a reminder of how working together can solve problems.
