Wood Christmas Projects for Moms

Wooden Christmas ornaments give an old country charm to a Christmas tree.

Making Christmas crafts takes time and money. A busy mom needs crafts that are inexpensive, quick and still look elegant. Make these crafts to set around the house during the holidays or give them as gifts. You can make these from pre-cut or scrap wood that does not need any extra cutting. You just need to paint and decorate them.

  1. Letter Craft

    • Purchase wooden letters that spell a Christmas word, such as Noel, Joy, Hope or Peace. Paint the letters with red and white acrylic paint alternating each color. Let the paint dry. Outline the red letters near the edge with gold dimensional paint. While the paint is wet, sprinkle glitter on the letters, letting it dry, then shake off the excess glitter. Wrap the white letters loosely with gold cording, fringe, fabric or gold bias tape, gluing it to the back with hot glue. Paint small thin wooden stars gold and glue them on the letters randomly. Arrange the letters to spell the word.

    Scrap Snowmen

    • Sometimes DIY centers keep scraps of wood and give them away. They can be any size as long as they can stand up on their own. Sand the rough edges and wipe clean. Paint all but the top end white with acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry then apply a second coat. Let dry. Leave space at the top for the hat brim and paint a face with two black eyes and several black dots for the mouth. Paint on an orange carrot nose; allow to dry. Use baby or regular socks stuffed with fiberfill and tied at the top as a hat or make a hat from felt and glue it on. Use fabric strips with frayed edges to make a scarf.

    Elegant Star Ornament

    • Purchase a pre-cut thin wood star and drill holes with a 1.5 mm drill bit in two side by side points. Paint the star with white acrylic paint. While it is still wet, sprinkle iridescent glitter on one side. Let it dry and shake off excess glitter. Cut a piece of heavy gauge wire and string both ends through the two drilled holes. Curl the ends of the wire to secure it. These ornaments look elegant on a tree or as a door hanging.

    Reindeer Ornament

    • The kids can help make craft stick reindeer. Cut a ¾-inch wide craft stick to 3 inches long, paint it brown on both sides with acrylic paint and let it dry. Draw reindeer antlers on craft foam and cut out. Glue antlers on the back of the stick head.Glue two 5/16-inch craft eyes to the front and a mini red pompom for the nose. Glue an 8-inch length of 1/8-inch ribbon in a loop to the top back of the ornament. String a small jingle bell on a smaller length of ribbon and tie it to the loop.
