Giving a speech requires having a good topic.

Speeches are a necessary part of school life. Students at all ages are learning about public speaking and give speeches in a variety of manners. In elementary school and middle school, most speeches are oral reports based on a research topic. At the high school and college level, where students take public speaking classes, the students must give a speech without a report. Before research starts, the student must select a topic for the speech.

  1. Famous Person Speech

    • Topics about famous people throughout history are always a good informative speech topic. Options might range from historical figures like Abraham Lincoln or Napoleon to more modern individuals like a film star, singer or even a writer of a favorite or famous novel.

    Controversial Topics

    • Controversial topics for speech will differ depending on the political and social feeling in the area. Topics might range from animal testing for cosmetic products or medications to the use of nuclear weapons or war to government laws and even birth control. The speech can take a historical twist and cover historical controversy and trends. These topics are often used for either informative purposes or debate topics. Always use caution when selecting a controversial topic as some in the class might have differing opinions and views. The topic should always show the other side of the argument.

    Fun and Humorous Speech Topics

    • Taking speeches to the area of fun, humorous and entertaining can liven up a class and make the topic interesting to research. Topics might cover the paranormal, such as whether ghosts exist, or it might cover a topic like "laughter is the best medicine." Caution should be taken when using humor for a speech to avoid offending any individuals. Topics like laughter as the best medicine or about songs, cartoons or entertainment shows are usually appropriate.

    Persuasive Speech

    • A persuasive speech is any speech that tries to persuade the audience to one side or the other based on research and facts. Topics can range from controversial ideas like abortion, cloning or euthanasia to more mundane options like cosmetic surgery, the importance of books or even issues relating to schools like technology, life on the campus or dating in school.
