Community Colleges in Killeen, Texas
Killeen, Texas, is located about an hour north of Austin and is home to more than 100,000 people. Killeen is also home to Central Texas College, the only community college in the immediate area. Community colleges are often referred to as gateways to higher education, offering relatively inexpensive two-year degrees that some later choose to transfer to a four-year university. Central Texas College grants more than 300 academic degrees to students on their Killeen campus each year.

History

Central Texas College (CTC) was founded in 1965 and began serving students in 1967. CTC initiated an education program at nearby Fort Hood in 1970 and expanded quickly to serving military personnel on ships and bases around the world. In 1976, the college began providing educational opportunities for incarcerated populations across Texas and, in 1998, offered its first class over the Internet. Today, CTC serves more than 50,000 students in traditional classrooms and through Internet courses.

CTC offers a variety of two-year degrees as well as a number of certificate programs. Associates of arts and sciences degrees are available in subjects like agriculture science, biology, drama, journalism and teaching. Certificates, which often don't require a full two years of study, are offered in fields such as business management, computer science, nursing and hospitality management. The cost of attending CTC varies depending on the applicant's home location. There are three classifications of fees: in-district resident, out-of-district resident and international/nonresident. An in-district resident is a student who has maintained a Texas home within the Killeen school district geographical boundaries for at least one year prior to applying for admission. Out-of-district residents are those who live in any other area in Texas. Everyone else is considered an international/nonresident applicants. Campus Housing

Limited housing is available on the CTC main campus. One residence hall provides room and board for up to 120 students. Rooms are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis, and CTC accepts applications up to six months in advance of the beginning of the semester. The campus provides beds with mattresses, microwaves and refrigerators for each room, and handicapped accessible rooms are available. The total cost for housing includes three meals a day, Monday through Friday.
