Federal Pell Grant

The Pell Grant is a federal grant that is given on a need basis per individual. It awards up to a little over $5000 to people who are eligible. Eligibility standards vary, but single parents who receive welfare benefits are usually approved. To find out if you're eligible for the Pell Grant, you must fill out a form on the FAFSA website. Receiving the Pell Grant means you are able to enroll and attend accredited colleges for classes and degree programs. Grants, unlike loans, do not have to be paid back by the student.
PeaChic Grant

The PeaChic grant was created by women for women with the intent to help women build their own businesses. Single mothers benefit from this because they are able to pursue business training that gives them the independence to succeed in a wide array of work environments. They only award around $1000 to each grant recipient, but this is more than enough to attend a semester of business classes at a local community college, and brings a single mother one step closer to a better life.

FSEOG

FSEOG stands for Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, and it offers low-income students the ability to pursue higher learning. The grant awards anywhere from $100 to $4000, annually, depending on the need of the student. Single mothers who are eligible for the Pell Grant, may be eligible for FSEOG as well.

Aside from applying for a loan through a bank in your area, you can also check to see if there are any local grants available to single mothers or low-income students. Iyou live in the state of New York, you could be eligible for the Tuition Assistance Program, or TAP. TAP awards eligible students with up to $5000 in tuition.
