A security guard is often necessary to patrol and protect a large variety of businesses like banks, hospitals, shopping venues and transit facilities. The demand for security guards has grown in recent years due to increasing crime, vandalism and terrorism. Although some firms don't have educational requirements, they will often provide training programs. However, many states are now requiring formal training and licensing for security guards depending on the position.

  1. Basic Security Guard

    • Typically, this is an eight-hour course in which applicants learn crime scene prevention, emergency response procedures, and how to secure an area using proper force. Students will also focus on the legal authority for a guard and the security code of ethics. They will also learn fire and accident prevention, as well as public relations. Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized. You must be at least eighteen years old and pass a background check to apply for this position.

    Armed Security Guard

    • Depending on the company, the amount of hours for firearm training for a security guard can vary from eight hours to forty hours. Students will learn basic firearm safety, marksmanship and safe gun techniques and handling. The course will include mechanical safety of guns and legal aspects of firearm usage. Students will be tested and required to demonstrate knowledge of firearms safety. They are required to practice proper firing techniques at a firing range.

    Airport Security Guard

    • A majority of airport security officers are hired by the United States Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Airport security guards must have a high school diploma, but a formal education is preferred. If an applicant has experience with airport X-ray equipment it can increase career opportunities. To work for the TSA, you must pass a thorough background check and physical exams, and between 56 to 72 hours of classroom training is required. Applicants will learn emergency preparedness, security law and regulations, and domestic and international terrorism prevention.

    Private Security Guard

    • Private security guards are hired to protect individuals or privately owned companies or properties. Typically, private security guards are required to have a degree in criminal justice, and a master's degree is sometimes required for those in corporate security. A bachelor degree in criminal justice usually includes courses in psychology, sociology and communications. Most states require that private security guards are licensed, and previous experience in law enforcement or armed security is preferred.
