Kindergartners can practice fine motor skills by cutting out Valentine's hearts.

From Groundhog Day to Valentine's Day to all around wintertime fun, February proves to be a busy month in any kindergarten classroom. Keeping your kindergarten students engaged and excited with plenty of fun activities doesn't have to be costly. Using supplies already readily available in your classroom, you can enjoy all that February has to offer for no extra cost.

  1. Groundhog Day Shadows

    • Celebrate Groundhog Day on Feb. 2 by finding out if Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow or not. Discuss how a groundhog would need the sun to be shining in order to see his shadow. On a cloudy day, there isn't enough direct sunlight to create a shadow for the groundhog to see. Get a flashlight and turn off the classroom lights. Use the flashlight as a sun source and shine it at the wall about one to two feet away. Have the kindergartners take turns making shadow puppets on the wall by placing their hands between the flashlight and the wall. When their hands block the light, they see a shadow. Turn off the light and see if students can make a shadow without the light. Allow kindergartners to experiment with the flashlight on their own to see what kinds of shadows they can create.

    Groundhog Day Songs

    • Teach students simple Groundhog Day songs and rhymes such as "I'm a Little Groundhog" or "See My Shadow." Write the songs on pieces of chart paper. Invite students to decorate song charts with images of groundhogs. Invite kindergartners to be music conductors. Using a classroom pointer or their finger, have students point to the words on the chart paper as the class sings along.

    Chocolate Tic-Tac-Toe

    • Celebrate Valentine's Day on Feb. 14 by playing Chocolate Box Tic-Tac-Toe. Print off a chocolate tic-tac-toe game board for pairs of students. Have them cut out game pieces. Allow the kindergartners to pick their type of game counter and then play tic-tac-toe to see who can get three in a row.

    Heart-Shaped Animals

    • Provide kindergartners with construction paper in different colors, including red, pink, purple, white and other pastel colors. Invite kindergartners to cut hearts of various sizes from the pieces of construction paper. Once students have cut about eight or 10 hearts, give them a clean sheet of white construction paper. Have students use the hearts to create animals such as dogs, cats, lions, caterpillars, butterflies and anything else that comes to mind. Have students glue down their animals when they decide on a final design. Encourage students to use markers or crayons to add eyes, noses, mouths, legs, antenna, spots or other details to their heart animals.

    Snowman Art Pictures

    • Give kindergartners a sheet of dark blue construction paper. Have students use crayons to draw a snowman or other winter scene on the paper. Encourage students to fill up as much of the paper as possible with their crayon drawing. Create a saltwater wash for students to paint over their drawings. To make a saltwater wash, mix about 1 cup of table salt for every 4 cups of very warm water. Once students have brushed the saltwater wash over their drawings, let the papers dry overnight. The next day students will have snowmen pictures that sparkle like the wintertime snow.
