Many brides and grooms choose to honor their Irish heritage in their wedding celebrations. Ireland has a bright and vibrant culture with many traditions that can be included to make a wedding special. Choosing the details of your wedding and reception to fit Irish themes can tie together the elements of a wedding; create a memorable experience for you, your bride or groom, your family, and your guests.

  1. Colors and Decor

    • Green seems the obvious color for an Irish-themed wedding, but the Wedding Channel points out that more options are available. Irish superstition holds that green at a wedding could cause fairy interference, while blue is the traditional wedding color. A modern bride may, of course, choose to integrate traditional Irish elements into a wedding with any color scheme. To add Irish flair to decor and other details of the wedding, incorporate Celtic knots or Claddaugh symbols into cake design, programs, invitations or even printed napkins.

    Food

    • Traditional Irish food can be a hearty meal for your wedding guests. The Knot suggests serving dishes like corned beef and Irish bread. The cake is an important part of the wedding food, and it too can reflect Irish tradition. he Knot says that fruitcake is customary Irish wedding cake. A modern bride may choose a more common wedding cake flavor and reflect her Irish heritage in the decoration of the cake.

    Music and Dance

    • Irish music and dancing can add a festive note to your wedding. Consider hiring Irish dancers to perform or else do a few Irish dances yourself. The Knot suggests taking lessons before the wedding. For music, The Knot recommends bagpipes, an instrument of Ireland as well as Scotland.

    Claddaugh Rings

    • You can also choose a traditional piece of Irish jewelry as your wedding ring, to always carry a little of the Irish flair of your wedding with you. The Claddaugh ring is a customary Irish wedding ring, worn with the crown facing down before the wedding, then afterward with the crown facing up. However, The Knot warns that it is frowned upon to buy a Claddaugh ring for oneself; these rings are meant to be gifts.
