Grants for Dental Students
Grants allow researchers the freedom to investigate and explore topics of interests. While many grants in dentistry are designed for practicing dental professionals and dental faculty, some are also meant to assist the research efforts of dental students. Dental organizations and corporate foundations are among the largest donor of funds for dental grants.

Delta Dental Foundation

Students in graduate programs at dental schools in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio can apply for a research grant from the Delta Dental Foundation. The Dental Master's Thesis Award covers expenses associated with research activities, such as supplies and equipment rental, up to $3,000, as of 2011. Students must submit a detailed budget of their project and a Human Subject Committee Review approval if humans will be involved as research subjects. Students must also submit a research paper to the foundation upon completion of the project.
International Association for Dental Research

Students who conduct research on dental implants are eligible for an award from the International Association for Dental Research, or IADR. The Implant Research Group Young Investigator Prize for Student Research is open to undergraduate, graduate and students in post-graduate dental programs. Students submit research abstracts to an IADR committee that judges entries based on scientific merit. Two grants of $500 are awarded, one in clinical science research and the other in basic science research, as of 2011. Students who submit entries must be members of IADR.

Academy of Osseointegration Foundation

Students enrolled in dental school are eligible for a grant to support a research project about dental implants from the Academy of Osseointegration. One award of $10,000 is given annually to provide funding for basic, behavioral or clinical aspects of dental implants, as of 2011. The funds can be used for supplies, lab animals, technical assistance, data analysis, travel to research-related meetings and manuscript preparation. Students must include documentation about their work, including statistical analysis in their application along with a detailed budget.
American Dental Association

Dental students with an interest in contemporary operative dentist can apply for research funds from the American Dental Association. Students can request up to $6,000 when they apply for the George C. Paffenbarger Student Research Award, as of 2011. Applicants must submit a detailed outline of their project and a budget. The grant recipient must present their work at the annual meeting of the Academy of Operative Dentistry. The winner can also apply for up to $1,000 to cover the costs of attending the meeting.
