What Are Some Drivers Education Performance Objectives?
Driver's education programs teach new drivers about operating vehicles. Many states require a first time driver to complete a certain number of hours in a driver's education program before they can apply for a permit. The benefits of taking the course include lower insurance premiums.

Vehicle Control
-
The main practical performance objective of a driver's ed program is basic vehicle control. Students learn how to start, stop, gain speed, slow down, reverse and turn the car in different directions. Some schools start students out in a simulator then teach them in a real car. The car will have pedals on both the driver and passenger side so the instructor can control the car if he needs to.
Knowledge of the Road
-
A student needs to learn the different maneuvers she will face when driving on the road; teaching them is an important objective for the program. Learning how to drive through intersections, changing lanes and driving a safe distance from other road users is highlighted. Students learn this through practical driving and watching driving videos. Classes also involve learning the meaning of road signs.

Safety
-
Driving is dangerous for the driver, passengers and other road users; therefore safety is a vital objective to the program. Students learn how to react to conditions, traffic and other road users in a safe manner. Night time driving, driving in bad weather and awareness of pedestrians are some of the safety topics covered.
Responsibility
-
To pass driver's ed, students have to pass several handwritten tests along with the hours spent learning vehicle control. In states like Virginia it is a requirement that students take a module learning the effects of alcohol and drug-taking when driving. The class will cover how they affect the vision and co-ordination of a driver, as well as the legal implications. There's also a module on how fatigue affects handling a vehicle and how aggressive driving can have serious consequences.
