Free Cake Decorating Tips for Kids Birthdays
One of the most traditional parts of any child's birthday celebration is the cake. Depending on your skill level and available supplies, you can transform an otherwise plain cake into a child's birthday party masterpiece using a few whimsical decorations. You can coordinate your cake with the theme of the overall birthday celebration and choose cake decorations that complement the party atmosphere. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Form Pans
-
Bake the cake in a pan formed like one of the child's favorite things -- a cartoon character, toy, sport, animal, musical instrument, car or even a place. Form pans are available in tons of shapes. Cakes bake just like they do in a regular cake pan. Giant cupcake-shaped form pans also make a distinctive addition to a child's birthday celebration. For a party activity, allow children to help decorate the giant cupcake before they eat it.
Fondant
-
Use fondant instead of frosting to cover the child's cake. This can add a touch of flair that makes older children feel more grown up as they celebrate their birthday. Prepared fondant is available in numerous colors at cake and party shops and can be used to cover the entire cake or be molded into shapes, such as ribbons and bows, flowers, figures and animals. Mold the fondant with your hands until it reaches the desired shape, and then attach it to the cake.
-
Seasonal Themes
-
Decorate the cake with a seasonal theme. Pick key elements from spring, summer, winter or fall and incorporate them into the decorations. A spring cake could feature bees buzzing around flowers, while a summer-themed cake might be a lake with a fisherman perched on top. A fall cake could showcase leaves and pumpkins, while a winter cake may turn into a frozen lake with ice skaters.
Unusual Edibles
-
Kids often enjoy eating unusual things. Incorporate flowers, such as pansies, violets or candied rose petals, into the cake decorations. Those who are not squeamish can use edible and candy-coated bugs; use them with crushed chocolate cookies to create a dirt cake. Edible paper images are another option. Many cake shops can print any photo you want onto an edible sheet of paper that can be applied to the cake.
Old Standbys
-
Even the old standbys of sprinkles or colored sugar take on new life when incorporated into a colorful kiddie cake design. Sprinkles come in styles that range from simple round dots and jimmies to stars and animals. Strategically placed colored sugars can make fondant decorations sparkle. Altering the frosting pattern is another way to jazz up a basic cake. Make a square cake and frost it using a pattern of different colored stripes or squares.
Candy and Cookies
-
Incorporate the child's favorite candy or cookie into the birthday cake decorations. Put chocolate coins in a treasure chest, stick gummy worms in a garden or turn chocolate rocks into boulders in the path of cake-topper dinosaurs. Cookies are versatile cake decorations too. Make a circus-themed cake and decorate it with animal crackers or use chocolate rounds for the wheels of a train. Sprinkle crumbled cookies on top of and around the cake.
