To obtain a license, a nurse must pass the NCLEX exam.

The NCLEX , the National Council Licensure Exam, is an assessment that the National Council of State Boards of Nursing has created to test a nurse's knowledge about the concepts and procedures pertaining to the field. A student takes the test after completing a nursing program at an accredited college. Nurses who wish to take the exam must meet all of the requirements. Registered nurses must pass the NCLEX-RN, while practical nurses take the NCLEX-PN.

  1. Determining a Test Site

    • The first thing that you need to do is to find a testing location. Testing centers are located in most large cities. The appropriate information can be found by contacting the state board of nursing or going to its website, which should have a complete listing of potential times and locations.

    Registering for the Test

    • The next step for a nurse who wishes to take the NCLEX is registration. You do this by going to the Pearson Vue website (see Resources) and printing the application to be filled out and mailed, by submitting an online form or by calling the board of nursing and submitting the appropriate information over the telephone.

    Paying for the Test

    • Payment for the NCLEX must be made prior to the scheduled testing date. The cost of the exam, as of 2011, is $200. There are two methods of payment for the test. You can use a credit card and pay over the phone or online at pearsonvue.com/NCLEX, or by sending a check to the NCLEX Operations Center (see Resources).

    Taking the Test

    • The NCLEX is done on a computer at the testing site. Anyone taking the test must show documentation that validates identity. This can be a military ID card, a state-issued identification card, a passport or a state-issued driver's license. In addition, students must submit a signature verifying that all information is true and submit to fingerprinting on-site.
