Six-year-olds have different learning styles.

Six-year-olds have different learning styles. Some learn by seeing, others by doing, but any book report for a six-year-old should be simple as well as creative and fun. Children from the ages of five to eight years old are learning to think more abstractly and to organize material, so a book report is a good project to help develop these skills.

  1. Subject/Summary

    • Instruct your six-year-olds to write a traditional-style book report of two or three paragraphs. Have them start by writing one or two sentences on what the book is about in their own words; don't worry about spelling or punctuation as these are skills they're just beginning to learn. Next, have them write a brief summary of the book, again in their own words. Coach the children to elaborate on the central theme of the book; ask what they liked best and least by having them point out pictures in the book that illustrate this.

    Standard Format

    • Teach six-year-olds to write an introductory paragraph about the book they read. The paragraph should include the title, author and general idea of the book. Some skills that are beginning to emerge in six-year-olds are the ability to stay on topic and write in chronological order, so this type of book report will be a good learning experience.

    Fun Book Reports

    • Create a book report for a six-year-old that's sure to be fun by having them cut out magazine or comic book pictures that represent what the book they read is about. They can then glue the pictures in story order onto poster board and tell the story out loud.

    Poems/Songs

    • Encourage first-graders to write a poem or a song about their book by putting their thoughts down in four to eight sentences. As a creative addition, help them make paper or sock puppets to go along with the characters in the story.
