Organizations That Help Homeless Kids

There are numerous organizations in the United States dedicated to helping homeless kids. From providing shelter, food or counseling, these organizations offer a wide variety of services to homeless children. Organizations for homeless kids range from local charities to government agencies.

  1. Department of Housing and Urban Development

    • The Department of Housing and Urban Development deals with housing issues, including homelessness. HUD provides several forms of assistance to people in need, including children. Programs include an Emergency Shelter Grants Program and a Single Room Occupancy Program for families, as well as the youth-specific "Youthbuild" program, which funds projects to help high-risk youths learn job skills.

    Covenant House

    • Covenant House is a charitable organization that provides several programs to homeless youths. Programs include health care, education and job training, all of which are provided free to homeless youths. Covenant House also provides free counseling to single mothers through its Mother/Child Program.

    Coalition for the Homeless

    • Coalition for the Homeless offers support to homeless New Yorkers of all ages. New York City has a large homeless population as of 2010. The Coalition's youth programs include "Bound for Success," a day camp program designed to educate homeless children and get kids back on their feet, and "Camp Homeward Bound," which provides a 16-day retreat where homeless kids receive mentoring and counseling services.

    AdoptUsKids

    • AdoptUsKids is a joint venture of the Children's Bureau, the Administration for Children and Families, and the Department of Health and Human Services. The organization provides a database of children for potential adoptive parents and foster parents, including many kids from homeless families.

    Standup For Kids

    • Standup For Kids is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of high-risk and homeless kids. Standup For Kids seeks out and assists children who are living on the streets, through outreach and assisted-living programs. The Standup For Kids apartment support program provides counselors who guide kids toward financial assistance for housing and other basic necessities.

    Feed the Children

    • Feed the Children is a global organization that provides food and other resources for hungry children. Feed the Children's United States branch provides food to homeless and abandoned children as well as other types of struggling youths. Feed the Children's "Abandoned Babies and Children" program is specifically focused on children who live without family or shelter.
