Alcoholics Anonymous
-
Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA, is a step-based program for alcoholics. AA is free, and meetings take place every day of the week in locations all over the country. Anyone who wants to stop drinking can join AA, and participants work together to "sponsor" one another and provide ongoing support outside of the group setting. Participation is voluntary and as such requires that the individual have a desire to stop drinking.
Al-Anon
-
Al-Anon is a support group for those who have been affected by the alcoholism of a family member. Al-Anon groups provide family members with a place to meet, discuss and deal with their experiences. Al-Anon can help loved ones deal with the stress related to dealing with an abusing or recovering alcoholic. The services are free and membership is anonymous.

Alateen
-
While Al-Anon is for those of any age, Alateen focuses on the support of teens who have been exposed to the alcoholism of a parent or sibling. Teens are able to interact with one another and deal with the effects of exposure in an environment where they feel safe and understood. Groups meet on a regular basis, and members are invited to participate in workshops and retreats.
SMART Recovery
-
SMART Recovery (Self Management and Recovery Training) is a non-step self-help support group for alcoholics. The four main points of SMART Recovery are to enhance and maintain motivation, coping with urges, problem solving and lifestyle balance. New developments in addiction recovery are taken into consideration, which allows the program to evolve over time. Face-to-face and online meetings are free, including family and friend meetings for those affected by the alcoholic.
