Elf Costumes for Children
In German mythology, elves were thought to be a race of magical beings endowed with power that they used to both benefit and injure mankind. Later they were thought of as more fairy-like as well as the prime employees of Santa's workshop. In modern fantasy fiction, they are usually portrayed as a wise and beautiful race and great lovers of nature. The only staple of these creatures seems to be the pointed ears.

Christmas Elf
-
A little girl dressing as a Christmas elf could wear green or red leotards with a matching skirt and green, red or striped tights. A little white fur on the sleeves, neck and hemline is a cute touch. A boy dressing as a Christmas elf could wear a long-sleeved red or green T-shirt and sweatpants with fur or white felt bordering the neck and sleeves. Make a poster-board cone to fit inside a Santa hat. You can get pointed elf shoes at a costume shop or make your own from felt. You can also make elf shoes by sewing a pair of red or green socks into a point. If your little elf wants pointed ears, you can get some at a costume shop.
Buddy the Elf
-
Buddy from the movie "Elf," portrayed by Will Ferrell, is a popular look. To recreate his costume, start with a green jacket or long-sleeved button-down shirt. Cut the front hem so that each side tapers gradually toward the back. Add white fur trim to the sleeves and neck and a black belt. Form a cone from poster board and cover it in green and yellow felt strips for the hat. Make a pair of brown elf shoes from felt or add points to a pair of brown socks. The finishing touch is yellow tights.

Scary Elf
-
If the costume is for Halloween, you may want to make your elf a little scary. Use dark colors for tights and a T-shirt -- black, deep red, purple or dark green. Make a pointed hat from poster board and felt and buy or make a pair of pointed shoes. Props and makeup will make your little elf look scary. Put a layer of grayish makeup on his face and give him fake pointy teeth and a skull on a stick to carry. Add skull charms to the tip of the shoes. Finish up with the ugliest rubber elf ears you can find at a costume shop.
Fantay Elf
-
A fantasy elf such as the ones in "Lord of the Rings" will need a costume that is a little more historical. Start with tight brown or forest green sweatpants and a light gray or silver long-sleeve T-shirt. Make a leather-looking tunic from tan fleece or faux leather. It should come to mid-thigh and the sleeves should be elbow length. Use silver or gold fabric paint to add leaf and vine decorations to the tunic. Tall boots and pointed ears finish the costume. Your little elf might want to carry a bow and arrow too.
