Children's Birthday Themes

A themed birthday party inspires not only the decorations for the party venue, but also the invitations sent to guests and the activities at the party. Look to the child's hobbies to select a birthday party theme that fits with the child's interests and makes the child feel like the center of attention. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Carnival

    • Boys and girls of all ages can enjoy playing all sorts of games at a carnival-themed birthday party. Make invitations with bright colors and pictures of clowns to get guests in the spirit. At the party, set up simple carnival games at booths. Some ideas include a ring toss, magnetic fishing, knocking over cans with softballs, and putting golf balls into cups. As kids arrive, have them each decorate a paper loot bag and collect small toys and treats as they play games.

    Animals

    • For kids who enjoy adventure, throw a jungle-themed party where kids dress up in outfits to go on a safari and hunt for stuffed jungle animals hidden throughout the yard. Younger children might prefer a puppy or kitten-themed party with plenty of photos of fuzzy little pets. Kids who are fascinated with farms would enjoy a birthday field trip with some close friends to a farm to see the animals there and help milk a goat or cow.

    Luau

    • Throw a Hawaiian-themed birthday bash outdoors during the warm months or indoors during the winter when everybody is dreaming of tropical locations. As kids arrive, they can make leis by stringing tissue paper flowers and pieces of straws on string. For snacks, serve fruit smoothies and pulled pork. For activities, kids can try their hand at hula dancing or hula hooping and play "Pin the Tail on the Pig."

    Movie

    • The birthday child's favorite movie can serve as inspiration for a birthday party. Party stores often sell party plates, cups and napkins printed with popular movie characters. For a more do-it-yourself approach, recreate the world of a favorite movie. For example, throw a wizard-themed party inspired by the Harry Potter movies and give kids black fabric to wear as robes, decorate dowels as magic wands and create fizzy potions with kitchen ingredients.
