School Bus Safety Activities
School bus safety is an important aspect of everyday life for school children. One way to educate children on school bus safety is to involve them in fun activities. The third week of October is National School Bus Safety Week and it brings with it a variety of activities to get children involved. The activities, such as poster design and speech writing, can be used all year round alongside simple coloring and puzzle exercises to educate children in school bus safety.

Poster Contest
-
Every year during the National School Bus Safety Week in October there is a poster competition. Eligible children from kindergarten to eighth grade can enter the competition, which involves designing and drawing a poster based on a particular theme; for example, the 2010 theme was "Be Aware. Know the Danger Zone." As well as being a fun drawing exercise, this activity should be used to teach the children about school bus safety.
Speech Contest
-
For older students between grades nine and twelve there is a separate school bus safety speech competition. Students must research, compose, record and perform a speech on school bus safety. This activity encourages students to learn about school bus safety independently as they must conduct their own research. They must submit a video of the speech along with a typed copy, a bibliography of research and documentation that the speech has been performed in public on at least one occasion.

Coloring Sheets
-
Younger students they can color the letter "S" to match their school bus. The letter S can then be used to represent the word safety, and the teacher can give a talk on being safe on the school bus. Examples of the coloring sheets can be found in the resources section.
Puzzles
-
Construct or print off crosswords and hidden word activities. The children should then find and fill in the words, which should all relate to school bus safety.
