Security guards protect an employer’s property from theft, fire and vandalism. A security guard patrols the employer’s property to monitor for damage and deter criminal activity. Guards keep detailed records of activities on a property and notify authorities when assistance is needed. The state of Indiana requires licensure for security guard agencies to provide services to Indiana employers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most states require licensure for security guards.

Age and Application

To obtain a license in Indiana, the applicant must be at least 21 years old and apply to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. The state requires a fee of $150 as of February 2011, according to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. The application must have the name and business address of the applicant, as well as the business name and the residential address and name of all partners, directors, officers and business managers. Applicants for a security guard agency license must provide documentation of liability insurance for a minimum amount of $100,000 provided by an Indiana insurance company.

Experience and Education

Applicants for a security guard agency license must have a four-year degree in criminal justice. The educational requirement may be satisfied with a minimum of two years or 4,000 hours of experience in a related position such as a security guard manager.

Background Check

Security guard applicants must undergo a background check before licensure. The candidate must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor that affects the applicant’s ability to perform the job. The background check also determines if an applicant has had a license revoked in another state.

Renewal

A security guard license expires every four years in Indiana. License holders must renew the security guard license before the renewal date to continue working legally in the state. The holder of a security guard agency license must go through the reinstatement process if the license expires.
