Your wedding color palette will help you generate ideas for the ceremony and reception.

Settling on the color theme for your wedding can be a difficult decision to make because there are numerous colors and color combinations you can choose from. Additionally, the colors you use in your wedding say a lot about your personality. Once you choose your color palette, however, you will be able to complete the majority of additional decisions that need to be made regarding your wedding and reception decorations.

  1. Consider Your Options

    • Decide upon your ideal color combination by studying paint chips, browsing through wedding magazines, exploring nature and collecting fabric swatches. Be aware that you can use more than one color. In fact, if done correctly, you can utilize up to five colors in your wedding color palette. For instance, if you are having a fall wedding, whether it is held indoors or outdoors, a combination of autumn colors such as brown, bronze, orange, gold and Indian red would be gorgeous. Also consider where you are being married, as certain colors lend themselves better to certain venues. For example, contrasting, bright colors are beautifully showcased with a beach wedding. The style of your wedding, whether it's traditional or dramatic, romantic or avant garde, will certainly play a role in your color choices.

    Seasonal

    • The easiest way to select a color palette for your wedding is to base your colors on the time of year that you are getting married in. If your wedding is set for the summer, for example, opt for sunny yellows, greens, blues, purples or any of the colors that you see in nature during the summer months. Alternatively, a summer wedding can project a tropical feel with hot and fiery colors like coral, emerald, orange, rich yellow, various shades of green or hot pink, or a combination thereof.

    Romantic

    • If you are a true romantic and are getting married via a candlelight ceremony followed by an evening reception, you may want to pick soft-hued tones, such as colors in the pale blush family. The colors in this family range from mauve to ivory. A good way to utilize blush colors is by featuring roses in your bouquets and floral arrangements. Roses come in a lovely array of blush tones. Using pink lighting is another way to incorporate blush colors into your wedding and reception. Everyone looks good in soft, pink lighting, particularly when it is coupled with shimmering candles.

    Winter Wonderland

    • If you find that you are drawn to silvers, whites, champagne tones, and icy and pale blues, you may want to embrace a winter wonderland theme for your wedding and reception. These colors create an enchanting ambiance comparable to being in a snow palace. Use silver tulle or another cool-colored, shimmery fabric on your reception tables and chairs. Scatter faux diamonds on your reception tables or place them in crystal bowls. Hang metallic blue and white snowflakes from the ceiling in the room where the reception is held. An ice sculpture is an elegant touch. White and silver candles and flowers in the white and pale blue color palettes will complete the wintery look.

    Seaside

    • If you are partial to tan, blue, green, aqua and teal, you may want to have a seaside or lakeside ceremony since these are the colors of water. If you can't do a seaside wedding, you can still incorporate gauzy, watery effects into your decor by using shimmery blues and greens in your reception décor. Any flower in the blue family, including hydrangea, delphinium, statice or Veronica, coupled with greenery, is one way to introduce blues and greens into your seaside wedding. Dress your bridesmaids in varying shades of blues and greens, including teals, periwinkle, azure and sea foam, and give them turquoise jewelry as a gift.
