Careful preparation will make your family photo unforgettable.

Family photographs hang on walls worldwide, offering visitors and household members alike a chance to reflect and admire the family's love for one another. While no family is perfect, there are several steps you can take to get your family posed in a way that brings out each member's personality.

  1. Apparel

    • Whether you choose to dress identically or not, avoid selecting clothing that contains stripes or busy patterns, as these tend to distract the viewer. Choose solid colored clothing that is comfortable and easy to pose in. Have each family member try on a selected outfit prior to picture day to make sure that the clothing looks nice and draws attention to the person's face. Avoid clothing that is too tight, baggy or uncomfortable. Family members' outfits should complement one another, so even if you allow each person to choose his own outfit, remember to make sure the colors blend well together.

    Position

    • Select a position that is comfortable and offers viewers a glimpse into the personality of the family members. Instead of simply sitting on a bench together, take a picture of your family baking cookies, wrestling on the floor, playing in a pile of leaves or hugging. If you opt to take a picture of your family members sitting or standing in a group, ask family members to get close to each other for the photograph to avoid any unsightly empty spaces in the picture.

    Attitude

    • Maintain a calm, casual attitude to inspire a relaxed atmosphere. Photography can be a sensitive subject to family members who may have self-esteem or body-image problems. You can keep tension and irritability at bay simply by speaking in a calm, level voice and offering kind and gentle affirmation while you take the photographs.

    Technique

    • Even if you get an amazing photograph with the first shot, take several photographs of your family. You may find that you get an even better photograph after taking multiple pictures. Take the photograph at a downward angle, as this is more flattering than an upward shot. Shoot pictures from several angles, such as facing the family members directly or slightly to the side, to add variety to the images you take.
