High School Assessment Tools

High school students can be assessed in a variety of ways.

Since every high school student learns differently and excels in unique ways, it is important to use a variety of assessment methods. Student assessment tools at the high school level should also vary depending on the nature of the academic material. Teachers can use assessment tools to help them grade the students, but more importantly as a guide for how to better teach each student according to his needs.

Written Exams

The written exam can test a student's factual knowledge as well as her written communication skills. Brief question and answer exams, such as multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank exams, test facts and work well for assessing a knowledge of dates and figures, mathematical skill, and scientific proofs. Essay questions and in-class essays work well to assess a student's knowledge of the material as well as her communicative writing abilities. Essay-based written exams work well assessing a student's understanding of literature, philosophy, and history.

Oral Exams

Teachers can use oral exams and one-on-one conversational tutorials to assess the student's ability to communicate what he has learned. It is important to not only understand academic concepts, but to be able to discuss them clearly and apply them to real-world situations. This is a skill that high school students will use often in the university or professional setting. Oral exams also work well to assess student ability in foreign language courses, where vocabulary, correct phrasing and pronunciation are of the utmost importance.

Participation

High school students can be assessed based on their participation in classroom activities and contribution to class discussions. Many teachers believe it is not enough to merely complete assignments and show up to class on time. It is also important for students to actively engage in the material by asking questions and stating ideas during class, small group, and partner discussions. In order to assess participation, teachers must provide a platform in which their students can participate, rather than just lecturing during each class period.

Classwork and Homework

High school teachers can assess their students based on the classwork and homework they turn in throughout the semester or school year. The assignments should be assessed for accuracy, effort, and timeliness. Teachers should use the assignments to better understand each individual student's learning style and comprehension of the material. By frequently collecting and reviewing class and homework assignments, the teacher can assess the students throughout the semester or school year rather than just at the end when it is too late to help them.
