You must complete five tests to get your GED.

A high school equivalency degree is available for anyone 16 years old and up who has not graduated high school and who is not enrolled in high school. The General Educational Development (GED) Test features five separate exams on social studies, math, reading, writing and science.

  1. GED Testing Center

    • GED testing centers are available in every state in the U.S. Each state's testing center phone number, location and email address can be found online. Detailed information about the structure of the test can be mailed to your home after emailing the testing center. The information included details the scores needed to pass and the ways that tests are graded.

    Preparation Course

    • Guides and an online preparation course are available. These provide students with an opportunity to freshen up on some skills they may have forgotten. The study guide helps students rediscover lost skills and knowledge and increases their chances of passing the tests.

    Practice Tests

    • Practice tests will help you gauge your skill and knowledge levels so you do not enter the real tests prematurely. The resource also contain guides.

    • A GED test is available throughout the year in all states. Seven hours is given to complete the five tests. Different sections can be completed on different days, so you don't exhaust yourself. Your score on each section is valid for three years so the entire GED testing needs to be completed within three years to avoid having to retake an exam. The only place you can take your test is at a test center.

    Results

    • Results will be mailed to you within three weeks. A 60 percent score is needed to pass the exam. A high school diploma will be issued to you after successful completion. The GED test can be taken up to three times in one calendar year.
