Writing Sheets for Kids

Writing sheets for kids teach not only how to form letters properly, but sentence structure and number writing skills. Writing sheets for elementary students in kindergarten to second grade typically feature larger lines with a red center line serving as a visual guide. Writing worksheets for older elementary school children are commonly printed on smaller ruled paper and may include sentence diagrams, web rings and charts for categorizing various types of speech.

Coloring Worksheets

Worksheets for lower elementary grades often feature a coloring portion on the page. Students write words or numbers relating to the character or scene on the page. Although using writing sheets with an art activity decreases the amount of available writing space, students find the task less daunting and more inspiring. You can create your own themed writing worksheets to correspond to classroom lessons by cutting and pasting related images onto lined paper and photocopying them. Modeling Worksheets

Model writing sheets teach students the proper way to form letters or how to write in cursive. You can purchase printed worksheets that focus on all the letters in the alphabet or create your own with an ink pen and a copy machine. Typically, the model letters or numbers include dots to show students where to first place their pencils and arrows to follow while crafting the letter or number. You can also use model worksheets to teach children how to write their names or words.

Sentence Strips

Sentence strips are also useful writing tools when teaching students how to form words. You can use regular student writing paper, plain copy paper or long paper strips. You should only use writing strips after the students have a moderate knowledge of letter formation. By modeling an entire sentence, you may overwhelm a struggling student who has not yet mastered simple letter formation. When creating sentence strips, you can write letters to be traced or simply write the sentence above blank writing lines for the student to model. Introduce the activity with traceable letters and advance to a free-hand sentence modeling worksheet.

Science and Social Studies Worksheets

Writing worksheets are not just limited to language arts class tools. By creating writing activities for use in science and social studies, you increase the odds for student comprehension. When students write essays or respond to short answer questions, you can gauge how well they understood a lesson and when review is necessary. You can add an oral reading component or create a subject journal for future reference by students when preparing for a test.
