Easy Ways to Decorate Cup Cakes for Kids

Easy Ways to Decorate Cup Cakes for Kids thumbnail
Holiday candies are easy to use and make bright cupcake toppers.

Decorative cupcakes make memorable desserts for birthday celebrations or a personalized take-home treat from a summer gathering. Whatever the occasion, colorful icings and everyday snacks such as chocolate coated candies, fruit roll snacks, marshmallows, fish shaped crackers and corn snacks provide easy materials for decorating cupcakes. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Under the Sea

    • Aquarium cupcakes require blue iced cupcakes, colored fish shaped crackers, black icing and white candy confetti. Place three to four fish shaped crackers on blue icing, add one dot of black icing to each cracker for the eye and place white candy confetti on icing for bubbles.

You can also make easy beach cupcakes by crumbling graham crackers and sprinkling the crumbs onto an iced cupcake for sand. Top with a seashell candy and a cocktail umbrella. Check your local candy store for seashell shaped candies or use candy melt molds to create your own.

    Cars and Trains

    • You can make car cupcake toppers using miniature chocolate candy bars for the body and candy coated chocolates for the wheels. Use a dot of icing to attach wheels. Create a train by connecting the chocolate cars with a thin string of black licorice. Place a piece of round chocolate candy on top of one car to make the train's engine. Place the finished vehicles on top of iced cupcakes. You can also use pre-made fondant to shape vehicles for cupcake toppers.

    Colorful

    • Brighten up the dessert table with sunshine, rainbow and daisy cupcakes. Spread orange icing on cupcakes and top with orange sugar. To make the sun's rays use icing to attach the wide end of cone shaped corn snacks around the edge of the cupcake. Add a smile by placing two miniature brown candy coated chocolates in the center for eyes and pipe brown icing for a smile. To make a rainbow topper, cut a multi-colored rolled fruit snack into strips of a half-inch wide by two inches long. Bend the strip and place on top of a blue iced cupcake. Add miniature white marshmallows around the ends of the rainbow for clouds. Cut a large marshmallow into five slices to create petals for a daisy cupcake. Place the slices onto a yellow iced cupcake and put a round candy or a dot of icing in the center to finish.

    Simply Simple

    • Hosting a pink party? Spread differing shades of pink icing on the cupcakes. Dip iced cupcakes in colored sugar and top with a toy or candy ring for a glamour party. Create a playing field by spreading green icing on cupcakes and add a pre-made cupcake topper of your favorite sports ball. Decorative cupcake wraps slide over the paper baking cup and instantly dress up plain iced cupcakes.
