Florida provides the ideal environment for students seeking to become pilots. Many aviation colleges in Florida are located in the Daytona Beach area on the Atlantic coast of Florida. The weather conditions here are agreeable to flying more than 360 days per year. The Embry Riddle Aeronautical University provides students with an aviation degree and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved flight courses. This is the first step to becoming a professional pilot. Florida also has a number of aviation schools which offer flight instruction courses to help students become either private or commercial pilots.

  1. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University

    • Embry Riddle Aeronautical University is one of the oldest aviation and aerospace universities in the world. It is an independent university with two main campuses, one of which is based in Daytona Beach, Florida. The university offers 30 degree programs in subjects such as aeronautical science, aeronautical systems maintenance, electronics, engineering, and air traffic management. It also provides courses in private, commercial, and multi-engine flight approved by the FAA. Annual tuition fees in 2010/2011 are $29,248 and flight instruction fees are around $15,000 per year.

    Daytona Aviation Academy

    • Daytona Aviation Academy is a flight school based at Daytona Beach International Airport, Florida. The academy provides courses for students seeking to become private, commercial, or multi-engine pilots. The courses are all approved by the FAA. Students at the academy come from diverse backgrounds such as high school and college students and working professionals. 2011 hourly rates are $30 to $40 for instruction and $85 to $200 for aircraft rental.

    Phoenix East Aviation

    • Founded in 1972, Phoenix East Aviation is a flight school based in Daytona Beach, Florida. Its courses are approved by the FAA and it provides training for students seeking to become private, commercial or airline transport pilots. Students at Phoenix East can also work toward an aviation degree. Students at the school have access to single and multi-engine aircraft as well as state-of-the-art flight simulators. The school has access to Daytona Beach Airport and four other non-controlled airports in the area.

    Orlando Flight Training

    • Orlando Flight Training is an aviation school located in Orlando, Florida. Its flight programs are all approved by the FAA. The school offers private, commercial and airline pilot training courses. Students benefit from a fleet of 45 single and multi-engine aircraft and state-of-the-art flight simulators. Course fees in 2011 range from $7,000 to $55,000. The price of each course is determined by the hours and type of aircraft flown.
