Art Projects for People With Limited Mobility

Painting is one project for people with limited mobility.

For those who can't easily move around, art projects are one way to use their creativity and make something of their own. Painting, beading, making collages and working with clay are all projects you can do from a wheelchair at a table or from bed on a tray. Some of these arts can also improve dexterity while the artist is creating.

Painting

Painting is one way to express yourself artistically, even if you can't easily move around. Artists can use an easel if they need to work on an angled canvas, or a board across the lap as a flat surface to paint upon. A paintbrush will work well for this project; however, if the brush is too hard to grip, try a sponge (which is easier to handle) to create artwork. Finger painting is another option.

Clay

Clay projects are another way to help people with limited mobility make something creative. According to the Incredible Art Department's website, the tactile feel of clay can also improve dexterity. Start with a block of molding clay, working it together in your hands until it is soft. Then you can create any shape you choose, from a bowl to a small sculpture. If you can't reach the hard surface of a table, a board across your lap or a TV tray will work, too.

Beading

Artists with limited mobility can create beaded jewelry from their chair or bed. Some may choose to use traditional beading methods, using pliers, tweezers and wire to thread together necklaces, bracelets or key chains. This process does require a steady hand. If dexterity is a problem, try using large-holed beads and threading them onto pipe cleaners. These will be easier to handle and string.

Collage

You can make a collage out of just about anything you can glue together. Flip through a magazine and cut out interesting photos or colors; you can also use pictures you've taken. Then, using a glue stick, paste these images together on a paper as you choose. Picture frames or flower pots can make an alternative base for a collage. If cutting with scissors is difficult, try using electric cutting scissors to snip the images.
