Project Management Projects

Project management exists in many different industries. Typical project types include IT projects such as software and hardware installation, marketing projects and construction projects. Though each detail is quite different, the core of project management for each type of project is the same. Essentially, the project manager oversees scheduling of tasks, directs resources, monitors task milestones and ensures achievement of outcomes within budget.

  1. Software Installation

    • One of the most common project management projects is software installation. An IT project manager handles this type of project. The IT PM may be involved with initial selection of the software or may step in once the organization decides which product to develop or purchase. Software installation projects may occur internally, such as a company implementing a new front-end system, or an IT PM may work for a software development company managing customization and installation of software for clients.

    Hardware Installation

    • When a company opens a new facility or upgrades systems, it may install new telephone and computer systems. An IT PM often manages this project. From working with telecommunications, IT staff and operations departments to analyze business needs to ensuring proper equipment orders and delivery, the IT PM oversees all aspects of the hardware installation. She closely monitors the project's timeline and budget, both of which have a high probability of getting out of control without close supervision. In addition to install, the IT PM may also coordinate training and work directly with vendors when conflict arises.

    Marketing Projects

    • Organizations may hire project managers to oversee marketing projects from conception to production. Whether the project has print or web components, it may include creation of content, formatting, graphic design, conforming to contractual obligations, working with printing vendors, working with clients, meeting time lines, meeting budgets and shipping, posting and dissemination of materials. With marketing materials, a fluid and well thought out time line is essential to successfully producing materials to meet deadlines for printing, posting and shipping. The PM coordinates scheduling of the project tasks, monitors progress for timeliness and confirms project is on budget.

    Construction Projects

    • Many builders, property owners and commercial real estate companies hire project managers to oversee construction projects. The construction PM is responsible for supervising the implementation plan, directing resources to complete the construction and managing the budget of a residential or commercial project. Construction projects are not limited to buildings or facilities but encompass roads, bridges and other structures. The construction PM oversees scheduling, hiring, construction activities, plumbing and electrical, confirmation of permits and approvals, excavation and any tasks related to completion of the project. Additionally, construction projects must be in compliance of safety and other governmental regulations.
