Popular After School Activities
After-school activities can be just as important for children as the work they do in the classroom. Lots of fun and safe ways exist to keep children entertained after they get home from a long day at school, and many can be fun for the whole family. Being creative and resourceful can help make popular after-school activities educational as well as fun.

Camera Walking
-
In camera walking, you and your child go about your everyday lives -- running errands, going to sports practice, etc. -- but snap photos all along the way. You can even pose in some of the pictures. Then print or develop the pictures and lay them out at home. Decide which pictures you both like and put them in any sequence to tell a fun story. Then tape or glue them to a large poster board or paper and add whatever captions you like.
Family Gardening
-
Many adults enjoy gardening as a hobby, and children can join in the fun. Children can burn off energy digging, seeding and tending to plants. They also will learn about plants and insects firsthand. All you will need are clothes that can get dirty, small window boxes or containers for the plants and some child-size tools.

Drawing Upside Down
-
One quirky after-school activity is for children to draw pictures upside down. Help them select a subject and instruct them to draw it as if it were upside down. This is a fun way to engage a child's creativity. All you will need are pencils, paper and maybe some crayons for color. You can use any household object or items around the neighborhood as subjects.
Tag and Freeze Tag
-
A good game of tag or freeze tag never goes out of style. Round up some of your child's friends in the back yard and watch them enjoy running from whoever is "It." It's a great way for children to burn off energy while being physically active. It also helps children connect outside of school. Make sure to provide proper supervision.
