Honor the presidents with art.

Being the president of the United States entails great responsibility. Not only is the president honored by people in all nations, he is respected by the people he serves. Incorporate the power of the country he wields and the patriotic spirit of its people into your art project lesson plan.

  1. Presidential Picture Frame

    • Surround a picture of a president with a patriotic picture frame made from the outside section of a paper plate. Cut the inside section from a paper plate, leaving the outer circle. Place a star stencil over construction paper of red, white and blue and cut several sizes of stars. Apply paste to the back of each star and press it down on the plate. Alternate the stars' colors and sizes as you attach them to the plate. Pick a president you admire and enlarge a photograph of him on a copy machine. Glue it to a second paper plate and cut the excess paper. Glue the back of the star frame and attach it to the picture plate.

    Patriotic Windsock

    • Fly your patriotic windsock this year along with your flag. Cut both ends off of a round box from the kitchen, such as an oatmeal, salt or cocoa box. Cover the box with paste and press blue construction paper over the box. Wrap a star stencil around the box and fill in the stars with white paint. Cut 1-inch-wide by 12-inch-long strips of red and white tissue paper. Staple one end of the tissue paper to the box. Punch four holes on the opposite end of the box and insert a string through the holes. Gather the strings together and knot them. Form a loop and knot the ends again.

    Presidential Stars

    • Take a white poster board and paint one quarter of it blue. On the other three quarters of the poster board, alternate painting a red stripe with a blank white space. This is your outline of an American flag. Glue white construction paper to a piece of cardboard and cut out stars with a stencil. Copy a picture of each president and glue it to a star. Arrange the stars on the blue paint to make sure they all fit and then glue them to the blue painted section to complete the presidential flag.

    Presidential Book

    • Highlight the symbols of democracy as students draw a presidential book. Instruct students to draw a map of the United States. Give them a picture of each president and instruct them to draw the party symbol and state of his birth. Also have the students cut out pictures to attach to the president pages. Some pictures might include a cherry tree and ax for Washington or a log cabin for Lincoln. Others might include a $20 bill for Jackson, the presidential seal or Air Force One.
