Change the way documents open in Adobe Reader.

Adobe Reader is a popular software used to open and view Portable Document Format (.pdf) files. It can be used alone to view files directly from your computer's hard drive and it can be used as an add-in to a browser to view documents directly from the Internet. During installation, Adobe Reader tells the computer that any .pdf file that is opened should be opened with it. When the .pdf is opened, Reader uses the default options to open the file in whichever view is chosen in the Reader configuration file. You can change these defaults to suit your preferences.

  1. Accessing Adobe Reader

    • Click "Start" > "All Programs" > "Adobe Reader" to open the program so you can make configuration changes. When configuring Adobe Reader to open documents how you desire, open it from the Start menu.

Adobe Reader can also be found inside a browser's "Add-On" feature list. In Firefox, choose "Tools" > "Options" > "Applications" to see options associated with Adobe. In Internet Explorer, find Adobe under "Tools" > "Internet Options" > "Programs" > "Manage Add-Ons" and choose to show "All Add-Ons."

    Documents

    • Choose "Edit" > "Preferences" and then look through and change the open and save settings from the "Documents" option in the left window pane. Here, you can change settings for optimizing for faster web view, automatically saving changes, and allowing documents to hide menu bars and toolbars.

    Full Screen

    • Choose "Edit" > "Preferences" and then look through and change the full-screen appearance, navigation and setup from the "Full Screen" option in the left window pane. Here, you can change settings for showing navigation bars, background colors and how the screen is filled, such as one page at a time.

    General

    • Choose "Edit" > "Preferences" and then look through and change the startup, hand tool and warnings from the "General" option in the left window pane. Here, you can change settings for making the hand tool use the mouse-wheel for zooming, showing edit warnings and splash screens.
